If there's one thing I've learnt from Game of Thrones ...

... it's to always read the book before watching the TV programme or film!

I've just finished watching the third series of this HBO series, and those who have seen it will know what I'm talking about. Don't worry those that haven't, I wont give away any spoilers!

All I will say is that Series 3, episode 9 has left me more than a little traumatised. I was totally unprepared for the closing scenes and even though I watched it last Sunday I still haven't got over it. I'm not sure I ever will to be honest.

I'm kicking myself too because I would have much preferred to have read it first before seeing it. So from this, I'm going to vow to myself that I will always read the book first and not spoil the experience of reading it first.

It inspires me in my writing too, to have a reaction like this to either book or film/TV series. I would love to be able to write something to bring out the same kind of reaction in other people, and it's what I'm striving for with my projects.

Do you know which Game of Thrones experience I'm referring to?

Are there any other books or films/TV series that bring out this reaction?

  1. Oh gods, that scene was .... so .... *spoilers*

Wow. I'd almost put that out of my mind until you brought it up. I'm going to need to sit in a dark corner for a while :S

I accidentally read a spoiler for GoT for Book 6, which has ruined a lot of the series for the next year or so for me :(

    1. Sorry for the reminder Jamie. I keep forgetting and then remembering and it all comes flooding back. I'm doing my best to avoid any spoilers on the internet. So far, so good ...

  2. I haven't seen season 3 at all, but I've read up to the end of book 3, so I am pretty sure I can guess the scene. I really need to read the books again & keep going onto b4.

    1. I've only read the first book so far, but I need to keep going with the rest now. So little time, still so much to read!

  3. I've only seen a few episodes here and there. Some time I'll watch it on Nexflix. Lots of books are better than the movie for me. The movie seems to have little in common with the book except the character names and a basic plot concept.

I agree that your reaction is exactly what I hope to achieve in my writing.

    1. I agree Donna. I'd much rather read the writers story before seeing someone else's interpretation.

  4. Even though I haven't seen or read Game of Thrones yet, I do think I know what scene you're talking about. I typically prefer reading the book first, although I saw Catching Fire without having read the book and at the rate I'm going, it'll likely be the same with the Mockingjay parts.

    1. I tried reading all the books before watching Catching Fire but failed miserably. Like you say though, there's plenty of time before Mockingjay!

  5. I watched it a while ago and I'm still traumatized…
I'm reading the books now/after though, so it will be spoiled for me, still I'm enjoying both ;)
