Novels Films II Blogfest - Part I

This 'fest comes from Madeleine Sara at Scribble and Edit to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of her blog and is a three day celebration, 2nd-4th September.

If you want to join in then it's not too late, and you can do one, two or all three days, it's entirely up to you! Just head over to Madeleine's blog to get signed up.

Today's focus is:

Are there any novels you have seen as films/TV adaptations in which the novel left you cold?

or

Is there a film that surprised you and prompted you to read the novel?

One film that prompted me to go out and read the books was The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

I tried so many times to read the books when I was in high school, but The Hobbit was the only one I managed to get through and enjoy. I don't know why I couldn't get to grips with them way back then, goodness knows I really wanted to but I just didn't have the time to get into them properly.

When The Fellowship came out I really loved it, of course, and that gave me the impetus to finally get on with reading the book. I managed to read all three of the books before The Two Towers came out, which I usually prefer to do, book before film.

For me, the enjoyment of the film enhanced the books so that I could finally enjoy them too.

Have you seen any films that have made you want to read the book?

  1. I watched the LOTR films before I read the books, and I normally don't do that either, but I just couldn't get into the books.

I finally finished them all in 2005 when I was living in Russia and surrounded by Cyrillic that I couldn't read very well. The LOTR books were the only ones I had in English.

    1. They were pretty tough to get through, but I guess they may not seem that way if you're surrounded by foreign writings. I'm glad I got through them in the end.

  2. I read the LOTR books so many years ago that I remembered so little. The movies definitely prompted me to read them again.

    1. It's been a few years now since I've read them so I may have to dig them out again soon.

  3. I've always wanted to read the LOTR books also, but I never had the chance to. I've watched all three movies though! I should definitely attempt to read the books one day! Thank you for sharing yours!

    1. Thanks for stopping by. They are definitely worth the read once you get around to it. I think the key is not to think about how fantastic everyone else says they are and just make your own judgment.

  4. LotR was the same for me - though I got halfway through fellowship and then stopped. It took me another 10 years to finish it, and I've still not read Two Towers or Return of the King. As great as Tolkien is, those books are just long.

    1. It's really refreshing to hear so many others have had difficulty with these books. I always felt like I was missing something when so many people raved about them.
I wonder if part of it is an age thing ...

  5. I still haven't managed to read LotR, but all 3 books have been on my shelf for many years now. I'll get to them ... someday soon. :) And of course the movies are spectacular.

    1. The movies were brilliant, and I've seen them many times. The end of the books is quite different but it's a lot to get through to find out for yourself.

  6. I think the movies were wonderful but the books were hard going.

    1. I agree Denise. The next time I read them I'm going to make sure I've got a fairly free calendar so I can fully concentrate on them. I can't see that happening any time soon then!

  7. I've read lots of books that make me want to watch the film but I can't think of a single film that made me want to read the book. Glad you finally read LoTR. It did start slow in that first book.
