Camp NaNoWriMo 2013 - Are you signed up yet?

Now, I don't know if I'll regret this decision but I'm going to have a go at Camp NaNoWriMo this July.

I've tried the usual NaNoWriMo that runs in November twice, and I have failed pitifully on both occasions. I know where I went wrong though, and it was all down to my lack of planning. I know many writers can write by the seat of their pants, with the story coming to them as they go, but if there's one thing I've learnt (and so far, this may be the only thing I've learnt), it's that I'm a planner.

So this time around I've made time to sit and make notes, planning the basic outline of the story I want to tell. It's a story that I've been carrying around with me for over a year, so it's going to be nice to finally get down to doing something with it.

The beauty of Camp NaNo this year is that you can actually set your own word target. When I've done NaNoWriMo before the aim has always been 50,000 words, which equates to about 1667 words a day. This just hasn't been possible for me, and it was a bit like throwing myself right in at the deep end. While this isn't always a bad thing, it was for me as I floundered quickly and sank without a trace.

In July my target is going to be 25,000, which means a more manageable 800 words a day. If I go over this, then great, but it's a more realistic target for my circumstances.

I'll keep you updated on how I get on, but in the meantime it's back to planning.

If you fancy having a go at Camp NaNoWriMo or to get more information, head over to the website to sign up. Enjoy!!!

  1. Good luck! It sounds like you've got a realistic goal and if that outline's done, what can go wrong? Go get them!

  2. I'm all signed up :) I'm using it to write my creative writing dissertation, so just 12500 words for me; much easier than 50000! I can't wait :)

    1. I'm so glad we can reduce the word count to a comfortable limit. I need easing into this, ready for NaNo in November.

  5. I'm participating in Camp NaNo this July with the normal 50,000 word goal. And I'm completely with you about planning. I'm such a plotter. :)

    Good luck!

    1. I think the 50,000 limit would be too much for me to begin with. I'll take it gently in preparation for a big one in November. Not long to go!
