Two blogs or not two blogs? - an IWSG post

This post is part of the Insecure Writers Support Group. A great place for sharing all those insecurities we writers have, and for offering advice and support for our fellows. To join in head over to Alex J Cavanaugh's blog, you can check out what other people are posting about and sign up yourself too. Enjoy!

At the moment I'm feeling a little insecure about my blogging. Well, maybe insecure is a bit strong, let's just say I'm a bit unsure.
I'm really happy with how this blog is going now, I'm getting into a rhythm with it and I'm just about keeping up with posts and hops and things. I'm improving with my commenting too, and responding when someone comments on a post of mine. I can feel my networking coming along nicely.

I've been debating with myself for a little while as to whether I should start another blog or not. I have a page set up on Wordpress which is pretty empty right now and is waiting for me to do something with it properly. I like the look of Wordpress and I'm finding my way around now, but I need to have a think about what it would be for.

I've heard some horror stories about peoples Blogger accounts being randomly deleted, losing everything they'd posted and their followers. This makes me think about transferring everything from this blog over to the Wordpress one, for security. There is a risk though that not all my followers will come, and I'll be taking a step back in that sense.

I've also wondered about having it alongside this one, perhaps purely for fiction and keeping this one for all the blog hopping fun. I'm not sure if I could keep up with posting for two blogs though, I've only just got myself on track with this one.

I have times, when I'm feeling more positive, when I just think 'yeah, it's a great idea let's just do it!' But then another part creeps in saying, 'why do you need another one? This one is perfectly fine.'
I realise I'm probably overthinking too much about the whole thing and should just get on with it, but I want to be sure before committing I suppose.

Do many of you have multiple blogs? How do you find managing them?

Happy IWSG Day!

  1. *cough* I just opened up my 2nd, and I'm praying it isn't a huge mistake. The one already eats time (although I love it), but two? :) You could just jump into the cold water with me - misery loves company ;)

    1. I think I'm going to do it, the water can't be that cold surely. Good luck with your second blog too.

  2. I have two blogs too, but the second one is a sporadic one designed to practise my article writing based on my day job as a fitness instructor. It only has a handful of followers so it doesn't take up much time at all. I probably wouldn't have two writing blogs, unless I wrote under two different names I suppose.

I tried to create a Wordpress blog once - I couldn't understand any part of it. Blogger, by comparison, is so easy.

    1. I like the simplicity of Blogger but I think Wordpress has more flexibility. I'll have a play around with it and see how it goes, keeping this one as a safety net.

  3. I tried to make a second blog for my degree (it was a requirement) but I found that I just posted everything on my old one and ignored the new one completely. That's just because they were two writing blogs, though, and it look like you're doing two different kinds, so it would probably work better! :)

    1. This is the dilemma I have been having, are they going to be sufficiently different to make it worthwhile? The ideas I have for them certainly point that way, I'll just have to test the water I suppose.

  4. Wordpress is OK for the basics, but you have to upgrade for features Blogger gives you for free. You have established a presence here, I would build on that and maybe make the wordpress one a showcase for your stuff?

    1. That's a good idea, and kind of the direction I was imagining for it. It's tricky knowing what to keep on here and what to put on the other. I suppose more substantial writing projects could feature on the other. Hmmm, I'm swinging back and forth again!

  5. I used to have 2 blogs, but I found myself spending more time on this one and less on the other. I finally deleted the second blog, because I couldn't stand to let it decay from neglect.

    1. That's the worry I have, that I'll spend more time on one than the other. I guess the only way to know is to try it.

  6. Doing multiple blogs is tough. You have to create some serious time management. Only do it if you truly feel up to the task.

    1. I'm trying to decide if I am up to the task. I have more time now to spend on my writing so it might be the right time to give it a go. Thanks for the advice.

  7. I'm also nervous about my blogger blog disappearing, but not so nervous that I'm going to go through the trouble of making a new one somewhere. I guess I'll just cross my fingers. But if you make a new one, I hope you can enjoy yourself with it. :-)

    1. Thanks Lexa. I'm probably worrying over nothing, and thinking way too much about it.
